208 Frazier Ave

208 Frazier Ave

After almost a year since the closing of The Dragon’s Roast, I was in disbelief when I saw a new flyer posted with 208 Frazier Ave on it. I thought it was a joke until confirmed by friends in bands who would be playing. I immediately cleared my schedule because there was no way I was going to miss this. On social media, the flyer had hundreds of shares instantly, and a large number were many close friends who found this venue as special as I did. While the space has been known by many names: Subway, The Hemporium, The Dark Roast, and finally The Dragon’s Roast. For over seven years, it was a home away from home for me and countless others in the Chattanooga music scene.

After wanting to give live music photography a try, and agreeing to take pictures for a thrash band from Nashville in some bar in Chattanooga I had never heard of, I could never have predicted how much this one night would impact my life. I found myself at The Dark Roast. I immediately became obsessed. I made countless friends with bands and regulars, but the ones behind the scenes, the ones working the bar and promoting the shows, became some of my best friends. (being back with most of them on June 19th felt surreal!) This place was much more than a DIY venue inside a bar; it was a place where people from all walks of life came together to express themselves without judgment.

In the Spring of 2025, the venue was in danger of closing, and the community came together faster than I had ever seen. A weekend-long benefit bash was booked with hundreds attending to see countless bands, both local and regional, come together for a venue they loved. Shortly after the benefit, a new owner took over the venue, and with it came a new name, The Dragon’s Roast, and mixed emotions throughout the community. I excitedly took over as the general manager and had big plans to rekindle the feeling in the community that I felt on my first night there. My ambitions were quickly extinguished by constant battles trying to make the old ways mesh with the new owner's business model. After many months of shows and the help of so many people, our efforts would be in vain as the venue was abruptly shut down with almost no explanation. Doors closed, shows canceled, and a community lost and hurt.

All this to say it was no surprise that the first show back after a year was a sold-out success. Everyone in the community is very thankful to Jess Haley and Stone Cup Coffee for making this possible. The room was at capacity from start to finish, and every band had the crowd moving. Locals Tabula Rasa and No Score opened up the show and there was nowhere safe to stand once the pit opened up. For Dog Pile and Cold Hard Steel there was no one standing still. The entire room was a sea of windmills and spinkicks and absolutely insane. I felt like I was home again.

It felt like a big family reunion seeing friends I hadn’t seen since the last show at The Roast. From sitting out on the porch laughing with everyone to dodging people moshing and trying to get pictures of the insanity. Chattanooga has been in dire need of an all-ages venue since the closing of this venue last year, and now we are hopeful we can fulfill that need with the very place that had been THE place to go for years. As of now, this show was a trial, but with how well it went, I am definitely going to be on the lookout for more shows at 208 Frazier Ave and you should too, regardless of what the venue name is. For those of us who have experienced a show here know, it’s an experience never forgotten.

Big thanks to the prromoter: @xjhaley - Jess Cardona for pulling all this back together and @chattanoogahardcore for additional promotion.

Big ups to @stonecupcafe for letting this happen once again.
